KC SLAMMERS HISTORY
The KC Slammers began when a few model car builders wanted to promote
their hobby. They formed a club willing to work toward a large stand-alone
model car contest in November of 1991. Flyers were left at hobby shops
and more and more people interested in model cars began showing up at
the monthly meetings. By the time of the first contest, membership had
grown to about fifty Kansas City area enthusiasts and a monthly newsletter
was being published for members.
The KC Slammers presented the first Heartland Model Car Nationals Model
Car Contest in September of 1992 as part of Main Street Hobby's annual
swap meet. In June of 1995 the club organized and presented both the
contest and the accompanying swap meet. The club has been able to produce
this nationally known modeling event annually ever since, with coverage
of the show included in the major car modeling hobby magazines. Automotive
model builders and collectors from all over the region and beyond regularly
attend the event.
The club normally meets on the first Tuesday evening of the month. The
meetings include secretary and treasurer reports, discussion of old
and new business, model cars on display, and the occasional debate on
various aspects of the hobby. From a high membership count of around
sixty in the early years, the membership now numbers around thirty on
average, with new members coming in at about the same rate as others
leave. The Kansas City Slammers Model Car Club is always striving to
increase interest in the model car hobby and to promote model car related
events in the area.
This year (2005) we will celebrate the 14th Heartland Nationals Model
Car Contest on June 4th & 5th with plans being made to celebrate
our 15th anniversary in a unique and special way. Building model cars
has been and will continue to be an area of interest for so many folks
who just love cars
big and small. It's become a Kansas City tradition!
